What is the difference between stroke play and match play in golf?

Stroke play is a form of competition where the total number of strokes taken to complete the round is counted. Match play, on the other hand, is a competition where each hole is a separate contest, and the winner of each hole is the player or team with the fewest strokes on that hole.
